I grew up in Dundalk when Dundalk was the most excellent place to grow up! We had nice neighborhoods (I lived in Dundalk "proper", Logan Village, Eastcrest), good friends, caring grown-ups, a very good library, bicycle riding on safe streets, hopscotch in the alley, swing sets and kiddie pools in the backyards, playgrounds, trees, fields, streams. There was the YMCA, where many of us learned to swim (remember Minnow, Fish, Flying Fish, Shark, Advanced Swimmer), and we had "Capers" Tri-Hi-Y group every Wednesday evening and Ping Pong any day!. all teams for all ages because there was no football in the public schools at that time, and the highlight of the season was the Steel Bowl Game every Thanksgiving, when Dundalk and Sparrows Point teams (in 3 age groups) battled it out. We enjoyed CYO dances every Friday night (thank you St. Rita's) and Teen Center dances every Saturday night, sometimes with Live Bands like the memorable and fun "Admirals" (thank you Harry "Sleepy" Young). We had Read's and Lillich's drug stores with wooden booths and soda fountains with real "soda jerks" and juke boxes, Arundel ice cream, Pinland Bowling for your duckpin pleasure with "student" leagues on Saturdays, the world famous (thanks to "Diner") Strand Movie Theater with Saturday Matinees that included a feature film, selected short subjects and cartoons. There was also the Strand Bakery next door with very tasty, freshly made doughnuts, cakes, and pull-apart bread still warm from the oven. We had Ameche's, Gino's, McDonalds, the Circle (best barbecue EVER!), and Captain Harvey's. We "cruised" these noted "hang-outs", usually driving Dad's car! Well, I am out of breath now! Why don't you tell me what I missed... or forgot? This is not just nostalgia, but, rather, remembering circumstances that formed our character and positioned us for the "real world" in much simpler times.".
